Sony Issues Firmware Update For 1080i Issues
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Hardware, PlayStation 3
Last night, Sony made a new firmware update available for the Playstation 3. Listed as version 1.3, the update is supposed to fix some of the issues people have been having with 1080i resolutions on their consoles. However, according to 1up, Sony attempted to fix the issue by boosting the priority for the 1080i resolution, which in effect breaks functionality for users HDTV sets that have native resolutions that support 720p.
Previously, users with 720p panels could enable both 720p and 1080i in their system settings, and when possible, the system would display content in the native resolution. Now with 1080i preferred, the system defaults to a resolution that requires the HDTV set to scale the video. The “fix” also doesn’t take care of the core issue: 1080i only users will still have the scaling issues that they had before, and 720p issues will have to toggle 1080i support on for Blu-Ray playback, and off for games if they want the best possible experience for their display. Until Sony can provide actual fixes for the scaling issues in games and Blu-Ray movies, they need to allow users to set resolution preferences individually for each media type on the system.

I think you have gotten this the wrong way round. Previous to 1.3 you could NOT select the resolutions that were available for the PS3 to use. Now you can - I have 480i, 480p, 720p, 720i and 1080i selected (these are the ones my display supports).
Previously when I started a BD or Resistance (game) while 1080i was selected (as default display, because thats all you could do), the game or movie would complain that it couldnt run in 1080i, and fallback to 480p!! Now.. it fallsback to 720p.. if thats not some form of fix.. then what the hell is?
You people are taking this Sony hating BS too far. Seriously.

The problem is that some people would like to use their displays at their optimal resolution. Prior to the patch, 720p was preferred, so people with 720p native panels were happy, and people with 1080i native sets were screwed. Now, with the new patch, its the other way around.
If I have a 720p panel, I want to be able to run all games at 720p, run the XMB gui at 720p, and run Blu-Ray at 720p.
Now, Sony doesn’t support Blu-Ray at 720p, so you have to enable 1080i if you don’t want your movies played at 480p. The problem is, with 1080i now enabled, games that HAVE a 1080i mode will now run in 1080i mode rather than 720p mode, which is less than optimal. Because each media type has its own problems, the best solution for Sony at this time would be to allow users to select their preferences for each media type. Enable something the XMB gui to allow me to set Blu-Ray to output 1080i, games to output 720p, and set the XMB gui to display at 720p so I don’t have to rely on my TV’s scaler unless absolutely necessary.
